Reviews – Musiq Matisse – Cadillacs Collard Greens and Cornbread
When I got ready to listen to Musiq Matisse’s new Mixtape Cadillacs, Collard Greens & Cornbread I already knew in advance he was gonna bring that grown folk music to make you think. Not only did he do so but he gave you a constant supply of lyrical talent over dope beats with out mumbling or doing your typical mainstream trend chasing bullshit!
Musiq Matisse paid homage to Rapalot, Suave House, No Limit, Three 6, DJ Quik, Ice-T, and several others on the song Legends. He cleverly put names of so many pioneers and legends into this song paying his respect to their contributions to the game. I respect the hell outta him for this because it is something that many artists don’t do anymore. Rarely do artists pay homage to those before them, now days they seem to try to tear them down, so my hat goes off to Musiq for this one for sure.
Like I stated earlier this project is grown folk music and one of the best songs is Mama’s House where he speaks on the importance of looking out for the one who looked out for him. On the song Something Southern he pays homage to the South, which I thought was dope considering he is from the East. Another dope track was Hustlers Like Us which has a soulful beat laced with lyrics of making moves and living life to the fullest.
My only complaint is there was only 7 tracks, but then again I’ve always preferred full length LPs over EPs, but the good thing is you don’t have to skip through anything because all 7 are on point. On top of that it leaves you wanting more, so I’m guessing the homie has alot more in store for us in the future. Defintiely worth checking out considering it is free and full of dope music!
