Reviews-Straight Outta Compton
Before I get into the film I need to get something OUTTA the way and that is the fact that I AM NOT ON THE NWA BANDWAGON I actually bought Eazy-Duz-It before SOC in 1988 way back when I was in 5th grade, yeah, I know I’m old! But my point is I was a huge fan of them since then, followed their careers, and interviewed some of the key players in the movie and MANY more that were not included in the story, which is really a damn shame to be honest. Now did I enjoy the movie, absolutely, but as I was watching it I was taking mental notes about what was not in there that should have been.First of all I grew up listening to the D.O.C. was one of the best lyricists of all time, but to be honest Cube and Dre along with the writers, other producers, and whom ever else wrote this combination of fact and fiction story completely shit all over D.O.C. I mean, you see the fuckin’ guy once or twice and they made him out to be some drunken asshole who was in an accident. He was not included in the film in a real depiction of a mega talented artist, all they really had him in there for was the accident. In reality he contributed so much to those NWA records.Next you got Jerry Heller the Co-Founder of Ruthless (He was not approached as a consultant to the film),therefore so much was left out and inaccurate. As Jerry told it on our show, his own book, several interviews, and others also told it this way, Eazy paid Lonzo to meet Jerry, but in the movie they depict Heller hunting down Eazy. Also I think they focused too much on Death Row during the whole beef situation. They completely left out key people who were with Eazy during those days such as his producer Rhythm D, Kokane, Above the Law, BG Knocc Out & Dresta, Dirty Red, and many others almost as if they didn’t even exist, which was hella shady considering all that they contributed. I also felt that Eazy himself was depicted inaccurate because during the days when Dre left Ruthless, it almost looks like they just made shit up as they saw fit. If you check out Ruthless Memories, a Documentary Film by Sergio of Eazy-ECPT.com so many people were interviewed that should have been interviewed for Straight Outta Compton. I have said it on my show several times long before the film came out, that since it was being produced by the two members who left the group, Cube and Dre, that it would be told from their perspectives and it would make them look as good as possible, but that is cheating the fans. You are lying to these young hipsters jumping on the NWA bandwagon giving them bits and pieces of reality. It was also odd that Bone was left out considering that they were one of the biggest groups of the 90s. It almost seemed as if Eazy was on his way to being broke when he died, but they didn’t tell you that Bone was selling millions of records as well as Eazy was with Itz On. At the end during the credits it showed all of Dre and Cube’s accomplishments, which they earned, but it shows how Dre brought in Eminem, and then 50 Cent, and Ice Cube’s Friday movies, but it doesn’t make mention of who made it possible for them guys to even be in the position to do all those things…..EAZY! If it wasn’t for him and Jerry Heller, Cube might not have ever been signed, Dre could have still been with Lonzo in glittery outfits and surgical masks, and the likes of Eminem, 50 Cent, Snoop and many others would be uncertain as well. I’m not taking anything away from their accomplishments, but if you are going to tell the story, tell the fuckin’ whole story! I was entertained no doubt, but I was also sickened that certain people were not included in this biopic. Let’s not forget MC Ren either because they made it seem as if he had a minimal role in the group, when in fact he was just as dope as Cube if not doper. It talked up Cube and Dre’s solo projects didn’t mention not one solo by Eazy, especially Eazy-Duz-It. To me that album was one of the dopest of all times, but in the film they only have him rappin’ to the We Want Eazy song on tour but no mention of the album selling millions. Definitely a dope film but that’s if you like partial fact and alot of fiction. For entertainment purposes it is worth seeing, but if you are an old school Ruthless fan like myself you will see through the bullshit!
